Shaheen Bagh: Right to protest doesn’t mean people can occupy public places says SC

New Delhi, Oct 07: The Supreme Court in the Shaheen Bagh case has said that right to peaceful protest must be respected but it does not mean that people should occupy public places which cause inconvenience to a large number of people.

Agitating people should not adopt means and modes of protest that was used against colonial rulers during the struggle for independence the court also said.

Demonstrations which cause inconvenience to a large number of people and violate their rights is not permissible under the law, the court further added.

Bengaluru: A couple linked to the Islamic State was arrested by Delhi Police for attempting to instigate people who were part of the protests against the newly amended citizenship law.

The police said that the couple were planning on carrying out suicide attacks apart from inciting Indian Muslims to conduct terror strikes.

The arrest does not come as a surprise as the Intelligence Bureau has been saying for long that these protests are the handiwork of anti-national elements, who are using the Indian Muslims and urging them to take up arms and wage a war against India.

The four-month-old child, Mohammad Jahaan, died of illness contracted due to the biting cold. The Opposition which has claimed that the new citizenship law is against Muslims has been terming this as a sacrifice. The baby’s father, Arshad, who operates an e-rickshaw says that it was for a cause: “I never felt it was wrong to send him. I would tell my wife Nazia that if the baby remained at home, he would be cranky and hence it was better to take him.”
