Modi was Waqas Ahmed’s target
Waqas Ahmed is a Pakistani national aged 24. He was number three in the Indian Mujahideen set up after Yasin Bhatkal and Assadullah Akthar. This operative who was part of several blasts in the country had plans on targetting election rallies specific to Narendra Modi sources say.
Waqas Ahmed whose identity is being verified by both the Delhi policr and the Intelligence Bureau is a major operative. His first stint with the Indian Mujahideen was in the year 2010 when he slipped into Varanasi from Pakistan. He had since then been part of major operations such as the 13/7 blasts, Delhi Jama Masjid shoot out, Varanasi attack and also the Dilsukhnagar blasts in Hyderabad.
He specialises in preparing the IED for the bombs and was actively involved with Yasin Bhatkal and the rest. During the 13/7 attack he had infact planted one of the bombs.
Sources say that going by the ammunition and explosives seized, it appears that Waqas and the three others were planning a major strike. They have been in and around Rajasthan for some time and had set up base on Jodhpur.
The police claim that their main target was Modi who has several rallies lined up in Rajasthan. The first time the IM tried to target Modi was during the Patna blasts. Since then there have been various inputs suggesting that the leader was under the radar.
The plan to eliminate Modi was drawn up by an operative known as Hyder Shaqoor. They had conducted surveys at both Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. However they decided to go ahead with their Rajasthan plan, intelligence bureau officials say.
