Is Mohan Bhagwat, the Chief of the RSS an accused as claimed by a magazine which says it interviewed Swami Aseemanand or is he is a target of some fanatics as per the probe of the National Investigation Agency.
The NIA has made it clear that no where during the investigation into Aseemanand had he ever said that Bhagwat had blessed the bombings. However an angle that they had probed was regarding an assassination plot by Sunil Joshi and others. It was found that Joshi and some of his accomplices had hatched a plan to kill Bhagwat since they were unhappy with him.
The plot to kill Bhagwat was first revealed by the Maharashtra ATS. The investigations revealed that Sunil Joshi who has been named as the mastermind of the Samjautha, Mecca Masjid, Malegaon and Ajmer blasts was unhappy with Bhagwat and wanted to kill him. During the course of the investigation conducted by the NIA after it took over the probe it was found that there a section of the accused in the above mentioned cases were unhappy with the manner in which Bhagwat functioned and also the fact that he did not come out and support them was what made them hatch a plan to kill him.
Apart from Sunil Joshi the investigations also found that several others too were keen on eliminating Bhagwat. The names of an RSS worker by the name S Apte, Major Ramesh Upaadhayay and Pandey also cropped up during the probe. It was alleged that Apte had paid Rs 10 lakh for this operation and he had even roped in Colonel Purohit for the same.
NIA sources say that a large chunk of these persons who are part of this conspiracy had felt that they were espousing the cause of the Hindus and the RSS top leadership had not been supportive. They also felt that when they were about to be cornered by the agencies, the RSS top leadership had not come to their rescue. In addition to this several of these persons also felt that Bhagwat was the wrong choice to head the RSS as he did not have it in him to carry forward the Hindu cause. Further they also felt him being chosen for the top post was a wrong decision.
The NIA says that it is examining this case further and has with it the statements of several persons who have spoken about this plot. An accused in the Malegaon case Samir Kulkarni had also told the Bombay High Court that this angle must be investigated since a witness in this case, Nitin Joshi had claimed that there was indeed a plot to kill Bhagwat.
Sunil Joshi who is allegedly a part of this was probably one of the most upset with Bhagwat and several other RSS leaders. He felt that he was not supported and they never did anything to help him. Joshi at this time had decided to go before the police and reveal everything about the blasts carried out by them. He had decided that he would come clean. He was however stopped by his close accomplices Dange and Ramji Kalasanghra, but he chose to ignore them. He was found dead a few days later in Madhya Pradesh. The NIA probing this case has stated that it was his close aides who killed him since he had decided to spill the beans.
